Doctor vs nurse vs paramedic, how do you actually choose?

My family hears medicine and assumes doctor. But the more I read the more I see nursing, paramedics, allied health. How do you decide between being a doctor and one of the other paths that still puts you in the room?

Having done the paramedic side, the difference for me was scope and how long you hold the problem. On the road I fix the next 30 minutes and hand over. I wanted to own the whole thing and follow it, so I switched. Neither is better, they’re different jobs in similar uniforms.

Nurse here, so the other view. I’m at the bedside more than any doctor on the ward, and that closeness is the whole reason I chose it. Don’t pick the title with the most prestige. Pick the day that sounds like a day you want.

Good instinct asking this early. A useful test. Do you want to make the final call and carry it, or be excellent inside a defined scope and pass the hardest decisions up the chain? Both are honourable and both are needed. The doctor seat comes with more years and more weight. If you possibly can, spend a real day shadowing each role. One shift tells you more than a month of reading.
