Hi there! I’m only first year, so definitely not far along at all, more like still finding my feet lol. But I’d love to hang around this thread and learn from you guys who are further in, especially about how the transition from student to actually being on the wards feels like. Is it as terrifying as it sounds, or does it just click at some point?

Hi Grace, I’m only a few months into intern year so still pretty fresh myself, but I remember asking almost this exact question last year. Honestly it’s a bit of both. The first couple weeks I felt like I was faking my way through every conversation with a nurse, like they could all tell I had no idea what I was doing. Then somewhere around week 3 or 4 something shifts and you realize you actually do know things, you just haven’t trusted yourself yet.

It doesn’t click all at once though. More like small moments where you handle something without having to look it up first, and you notice afterward that you didn’t panic. Those moments add up. Hang in there, first year is just about building the foundation, the terror part comes later in smaller doses.
