The Integumentary System (Skin, Hair, Nails)

The integumentary system is your body’s outer shield. Terms here often involve the skin, its layers, and common conditions.

  • Dermatitis: Inflammation of the skin (derm/o + -itis).
  • Epidermis: Outer layer of skin (epi- + derm/o + -is).
  • Hypodermic: Below the skin (hypo- + derm/o + -ic).
  • Melanoma: Tumor of pigment cells (melan/o + -oma).
  • Subcutaneous: Under the skin (sub- + cutane/o + -ous).
  • Ectoderm: Outer embryonic layer forming skin (ecto- + derm/o).
  • Xerosis: Dry skin condition (xer/o + -osis).
  • Lipoma: Fatty tumor (lip/o + -oma).
  • Onycholysis: Nail separation (onych/o + -lysis).
