Medical Language Conversion Challenge

Ready to flex your medical vocab skills? Below are 25 everyday sentences—your job is to rewrite them using the medical terms you’ve learned. Grab those prefixes, suffixes, and roots, and turn plain talk into doctor-speak! (Stuck? Peek at the tables or body system lists.) After you’re done, submit your answers below to send them to the Academy!

Remember that not doing this exercise properly defeats the point of you having taken this course and will only be to your own detriment. So really give it some thought and don’t be afraid to get anything wrong. There is no time limit.

  1. My stomach hurts a lot after eating too much pizza.
  2. I’ve been peeing way more than usual since yesterday.
  3. My heart’s beating super fast after running sprints.
  4. My ankle’s all swollen and bruised from twisting it in gym.
  5. I can’t catch my breath when I climb the stairs.

  10. I feel super tired because my blood sugar’s too low.
  11. My nose won’t stop running during allergy season.
  12. I twisted my back, and now it’s killing me.
  13. My sister’s coughing up some nasty stuff after a cold.
  14. I’ve got a killer headache from staring at my phone too long.
  15. My hands feel numb after gaming all night.
  16. My leg muscle cramped up during soccer practice.
  17. I ate something bad, and now I’m throwing up everywhere.
  18. My eyes are all watery and red from the wind.
  19. My uncle’s liver is messed up from drinking too much.
  20. I’m so nervous my palms are sweating like crazy.
  21. My elbow’s been stiff since I banged it on the table.
  22. My tooth hurts every time I chew gum.
  23. I’ve barely peed all day even though I’m drinking water.
  24. My neck’s sore from sleeping weird last night.
  25. I feel dizzy and faint when I stand up too fast.

Challenge: Rewrite each sentence with at least one medical term. For example, “My head hurts” becomes “I’m experiencing cephalgia.”
