Troubleshooting Guide

Upon successful entry into the vein, one should see a flashback of blood. If you're not observing a flashback when using butterfly needles or venous cannulas,
follow these steps:

1

Verify Needle Entry into the Vein.

Ensure that the needle is correctly inserted and penetrating the vein. If the needle doesn’t enter the vein, not only will you not get a flashback, but your vacuum tube may lose its suction and become unusable.

2

Ensure Inflow Roller and Clip Clamps are Open.

Closed inflow clamps will maintain venous pressure at near zero, inhibiting a flashback. Make sure that all inflow clamps are open.

3

Check the Venous Pressure in the Simulated Vein.

Increase the pressure in the simulated vein by elevating the fluid reservoir bag.

The presence of a flashback is not determined by the quality of the arm or mini-arm model. A lack of a flashback does not indicate that the arm is defective. A successful flashback depends on the factors mentioned above.

4

Evaluate the Needle Gauge.

Smaller diameters (e.g., 22G and higher) yield slower or weaker flashbacks.

Use a larger diameter needle (e.g., 21G or lower) for a more noticeable flashback.

Note: Be aware that larger diameter needles can cause more wear and tear on the simulated veins, limiting the service time of the arm.

5

Assess the Viscosity of the Simulated Blood.

If you use fake blood, it might be problematic as many recipes include corn syrup, which significantly increases the viscosity. High-viscosity fluids lower the chances of getting a proper flashback. Since real un-clotted blood is fairly non-viscous, consider using water from a faucet mixed with a few drops of red food coloring as a low-viscosity alternative, and clean thoroughly after each use.
